Challenge
African Youths Don’t Have The Same Opportunities: In many parts of the world, the opportunity you have to determine your own destiny is limited by circumstances, which is mostly outside of your own control. In our search for software developers, we ended up on the African continent. We met many young Africans that are as brilliant and skilled as their counterparts from other parts of the world. But they have limited access to interesting, worthwhile and well-paying work. For example, statistics showed that youth unemployment in Uganda is as high as 83%. With 78% of the population being under 30, this is a huge challenge.
Solution and Innovation
In its efforts to create remote jobs online for youth, WeAreBits partnered with Tunga to pilot a program that supports 15 girls in Kampala / Uganda to get online remote jobs via Tunga's services. The program is 3 months long and is fully funded by Tunga. The girls selected had to have some programming background in order to reduce the duration and cost of the programme. The innovation of this programme are:
- A unique demand driven approach to provide youth with online jobs
- By design the program is replicable in any country and suitable for woman in rural areas provided there is good internet infrastructure
Results
Through the efforts of WeAreBits and Tunga, more than 9,000 youth from rural and slum areas in Africa trained on ICT and transferable skills that led to 80% employment. In its journey WeAreBits collected a wealth of data and knowledge that they are willing to share to benefit more youth across the world.
